"Palenque has been part of McFarland for as long as I can remember, and to my knowledge, it’s the longest-standing Mexican restaurant in town. I’ve been coming here for years, even back when I lived with my parents. Going out for lunch after church or celebrating birthdays and other special occasions here was practically a family tradition. It’s one of those places that’s always just been there, and I’m glad it still is. The food has never disappointed me. Whether I’m in the mood for something as simple as chilaquiles, a refreshing shrimp cocktail, or a full molcajete when I’m feeling particularly hungry, everything has always been flavorful, well-seasoned, and consistent. Portions are generous without being ridiculous, and I’ve never had an issue with the quality of anything I’ve ordered. Service has always been excellent, too. There are about three familiar employees I regularly encounter, whether they’re serving tables or working the register, and they’ve always been friendly and professional. They’re attentive without hovering over you, checking in for refills, asking if you need anything else, or offering a to-go box. The atmosphere is another reason I enjoy coming here. It’s relaxed, welcoming, and has some character, especially with the beautiful hand-painted tables that I believe were imported from Oaxaca. On an ordinary afternoon, you’ll find a handful of people enjoying their meals. Come later in the evening, on a weekend, or during a holiday, and expect a much livelier, sometimes nearly full restaurant. What I particularly appreciate about Palenque is that it offers a nice alternative to some of the busier Mexican restaurants around Madison. You can enjoy a good meal without dealing with packed parking lots, excessive noise, or the general chaos that sometimes comes with those places. It’s also one of my go-to choices for dates. Good food, a comfortable atmosphere, attentive service, and a place where you can actually sit down and enjoy someone’s company. Palenque isn’t trying to reinvent Mexican cuisine or be the trendiest restaurant around, and I don’t think it needs to. It’s a dependable local establishment that’s been part of my life for years, from family celebrations to casual lunches and dates. I’ve never left disappointed, and after all these years, I still look forward to coming back. An easy 5/5 from me."
